Casting and Immobilization

Casts are generally used to immobilize and protect an injured part of the body while facilitating healing.
They are perhaps the most important treatment for serious soft tissue injuries and fractures, reduced dislocations, congenital and acquired deformities, and stabilization for post-operative repairs.
Casting takes a great deal of experience to do correctly. If done incorrectly, they can compromise skin, blood supply and nerves. To completely immobilize, a cast must precisely conform to anatomy and cover sufficient area.
